Genesis 4:1-16Adam and Eve had two sons, Abel and Cain. Each made offerings to the Lord, but the gifts weren't the same. Of the best of his flock, Abel happily gave. As for Cain, the best for himself he chose to save. God respected Abel for he gave from the heart. Yet as for Cain, respect his gift did not impart. Cain grew angry and his countenance fell. Inside him the anger it greatly did swell. "Why My son," asked God, "are you wroth?" "This anger, My son, you must shake it off." "If you do well, My child, will you not be accepted? Repent, My son, or by sin you'll be tempted. Sin lies at the door but it must be rejected!" As it came to pass, the brothers alone in the field. To the call of sin, Cain did yield. Cain rose up in anger and killed his brother. A lost chance to repent. Would God give him another? The Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother? I've looked all around. Abel's blood cries out to me from the ground." He could have confessed, but tried hiding it deeper. "How shall I know? Am I his keeper?" Cursed from the earth Cain had become. As a fugitive and vagabond on Earth he would run. "My Lord," cried Cain, "this rod I can't bear." "Whoever finds me will slay me right there!" A mark of protection and mercy was set upon Cain. There would be sevenfold vengeance should Cain be slain. Cain then went out from the presence of the Lord. In the land of Nod, to the east, he set down his sword. |
